The Skútustaðir Tour is a 4-hour tour where guests are guided around some of the most interesting locations on the farm while learning about its history and development.
The tour begins with a short introduction to the history of the farm and our company, Sel. We then visit the farmer´s ice cream shop, Skútaís, where ice cream is made on site from the farm’s own cow’s milk. Guests have the opportunity to taste some of their delicious homemade ice cream.
Next, we stop at the visitor center, where guests can explore an exhibition about the nature and history of Lake Mývatn. Here we also share the story of the building itself, how it first operated as a school, later became a hotel, and a few years ago was transformed into a visitor and ranger center.
From there we walk to the Skútustaðagígar pseudo craters, where a park ranger joins us (if they can otherwise it will be the guide) and explains the fascinating geology of Lake Mývatn and how the craters were formed.
The tour then continues to the local smokehouse that has been operating for over 40 years. Guests are welcomed by the smoker, who explains the traditional smoking process, and everyone gets to taste the famous smoked trout.
Finally, we finish the tour at our brewery, Mývatn Öl, where guests enjoy the brewery & tasting tour. During the brewery tour we explain the brewing process, from carefully selected ingredients to the finished product. During the tour guests have the opportunity to taste four different beers, each named after a local natural phenomenon in the Mývatn area. The experience offers an informative and enjoyable insight into the Icelandic craft brewing culture.
